Via Nicola Salvi is a quiet cobblestone street that descends gently toward one of the most iconic monuments of the ancient world: the Colosseum. Lined on one side by stately, neoclassical buildings with their terracotta hues and ornate balconies, this street reflects the architectural aspirations of 19th-century Rome. Opposite, a rustic brick wall overgrown with greenery hints at the layers of urban history embedded in this part of the city. The Roman pines, tall and slender, punctuate the skyline, offering a natural contrast to the man-made structures surrounding them. This street is not only a picturesque approach to the Colosseum but also part of the urban fabric that grew around Rome’s ancient core. Its location places it at the intersection of history and modernity, connecting visitors to centuries of urban transformation. The Colosseum’s Exterior At the end of Via Nicola Salvi, the Colosseum emerges in full view—a vast amphitheater of stone and ingenuity. Built between 70-80 AD under the emperors Vespasian and Titus of the Flavian dynasty, it was designed to showcase Rome’s engineering prowess and imperial grandeur. Its elliptical shape and four tiers of arches made it the largest amphitheater in the Roman world, capable of hosting up to 50,000 spectators. The façade is composed of travertine blocks, each meticulously quarried and assembled by skilled laborers. The Colosseum’s arches are framed by Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian orders, illustrating the Roman architects’ mastery of combining functionality with classical design. Though weathered by time, wars, and earthquakes, the outer walls retain their monumental presence, with sections reinforced or restored over centuries. Originally, the exterior was adorned with statues placed in the arches, and bronze clamps held the stones together, many of which were later removed for use in other Roman structures. The building’s perforated appearance today reveals the removal of these clamps during the Middle Ages, leaving behind visible scars of its transformation. Historical Notes 1. Construction: Built in just under a decade, the Colosseum’s rapid construction was made possible by the spoils of the Jewish War and the labor of thousands of slaves. 2. Materials: The amphitheater’s materials include travertine for the outer structure, tufa for the inner walls, and bricks and concrete for the core, showcasing the innovative use of Roman concrete. 3. Purpose: The Colosseum hosted a range of events, from gladiatorial contests and animal hunts to public executions and theatrical reenactments of myths and battles. The Colosseum remains one of the finest examples of Roman engineering, visible in its enduring structure and meticulous design. Its massive arches, soaring walls, and exposed hypogeum hint at the vibrant and complex life that once animated this iconic space.

Arrived with two young kids on a Friday night. Great location, old but clean apartment, expensive but smooth check in, overall it looked promising. Enjoyed the city next day and found out the radiators were cold only when back that early evening. Called them and was instructed to “reset the water heater” if it shows this particular error message! Clearly it had happened before as they knew what would be the exact problem! A very old water heater unit with poor plumbing and isolation. I could not get it back to function so I was asked to wait inside the unit till they send someone. She showed up after half an hour or so with absolutely no plumbing or technical knowledge, trying to fix it by talking to somebody else over the phone. She did not let us leave the apartment until she can “ fix it” This took more than two hours, so we lost our dinner reservation and were left frustrated with two hungry kids. I was upset but understanding, “ It happens”. In the middle of night, I woke up to the cold. The heater stopped working and we spent the night shivering. Called the the next morning, somebody else showed up and said there is a plumbing issue and he will get it fixed but it takes time. He let us leave this time and gave us the next door apartment key as if we need to take shower and said “feel free to use the next door, there is no guest in there” It was already 11am, so we decided to leave without taking shower as it was cold outside and we could not afford losing more time. It was a cold day in Rome, I received a text saying” all is fixed and ready” later on the day. On our way back to the apartment there was a down pour with thunderstorm, we all got soaked then arrived at a freezing cold apartment with no hot water. Called and texted all numbers I had and nobody answered me nothing till the next morning!! We were all cold and wet, so we tried to go the next door. Guess what, IT WAS LOCKED FROM INSIDE!! In the morning, they asked me “ IF I WANT THEM TO GET THE GUEST NEXT DOOR TO OPEN HIS DOOR AND LET ME SHOWER THERE 😳😳!! My younger kid got sick, We had to leave early to save us from freezing then spent the whole next day in a clinic to make sure if he is alright which was another expensive unforeseen add up. This management is now saying they are sorry and refund me for two nights. The nightly rate was different per night, Sat was the most expensive one , however, when it comes to refund for two nights, they picked to refund for the two least expensive nights!!! And of course none of the numerous fees they charged me on top on the rates are going to be refunded. To me this is a cheap and careless management which I would never suggest to any of you to try to deal with. If you care not to be left frozen in the winter or hot in the summer, read other people who reviewed them before me, DO NOT LET THE GREAT LOCATION FOOL YOU!! You will pay for it as I did!
